I have used Freeserve since shortly after it started up.
I collect mail for users on several networks using VPOP3
Here is how to set up a Freeserve account without using a CD and upsetting your existing connections.
Use this to set your account up - sub-domain name and password details. Freeserve setup http://www.freeserve.co.uk Username=freeservesignup Password=signup Phone_Number=0845-0796699 Signup=https://signup.freeserve.net/ Once you have an account, set up a mail client; POP3 connector in MS Exchange; or VPOP3 connection using these details and your account ID and password. HTTP_Proxy_Server=http://www-cache.freeserve.net/:8080 FTP_Proxy_Server=http://www-cache.freeserve.net/:8080 Gopher_Proxy_Server=http://www-cache.freeserve.net/:8080 SMTP_Server=smtp.freeserve.net POP_Server=pop.freeserve.net NNTP_Server=news.freeserve.net Home_Page=http://www.freeserve.net/ Help_Page=http://www.freeserve.net/support/ FirstHomePage=http://www.freeserve.net/welcome/welcome.htm
Remember that if your outward mail is going by NHS Net, you will not be able to send mail via the Freeserve SMTP server.
So for users within NHS Net, set the SMTP server to be relay.nhs.uk
If you want to set up a secondary SMTP outward connection, then I suggest a CIX account, as CIX allows SMTP forwarding for a short time after a successful POP3 login.
Alternatively, use VPOP3 and specify Direct SMTP rather than SMTP Relay. You then send each mail directly to the SMTP server of the user it is addressed to.
